Massage and Water….

By Jet Rupar, LMT EP-C

As a massage therapist, I try to explain why drinking water after a massage is so darn important. But, as humans, we do tend to just brush off the “please drink lots of water” request.

I want to tell you a story as to *why* it is that we insist on the water thing.

Yesterday morning I had went and gotten myself a massage. Told the therapist my specific issues for the day, and we went along with my session. When we were done, I got up and ended up feeling a bit “drunk” from the experience (which is not a bad thing, it just meant we really worked out my issue, which is what I definitely needed). I left and went on with my day.

As the day continued, yeah, I drank some water, but I found that as the day continued, I started to just feel not right. Maybe a bit achy, but that was because hey, I got this stuff worked on. But something else was off. Will admit… there was a small part of my brain that went “OMG, IS IT COVID???”

But, I decided to try something else before jumping to worst case scenario.

Since I was home, I started to drink water. And not just a bit. LOTS OF IT.

The more I drank, the more my body seemed to perk up. I started to want to do more productive things again. I felt better, not by just a bit, but by leaps and bounds.

After I do massages, I usually tell people to drink more water, because it is generally a useful thing. Our bodies use water every second of every day. Blood, the fluids surrounding our brains and spine, and even our basic cell structure all need this fluid to do its thing so that we can be us. If we don’t get enough, we can feel sluggish or headachy. And after a workout or massage, if you don’t get enough, we can even feel like we’re hungover.

So stay hydrated my friends. You’ll feel better for it!
