A thought about oncology massage

I was discussing life with a friend one day. As we were chatting, they looked at me and said, “I would love to hear about oncology massage and how massage can help people suffering through treatment have a higher quality of life.” I had to stop and think about this for a bit, because there is a lot of “stuff” that goes with massaging people who are undergoing treatment for cancer.

The physical impact of it is hard. Treatments can bring pain, nausea, fatigue.

The emotional impact is just as bad. Anxiety starts at diagnosis, if not beforehand. And trying to juggle doctors appointments, treatment appointments, work and life is just…. overwhelming. Emotions are high, and folks who are going through this process can feel very stressed, to say the least.

(And do note that I come from this from the perspective of a caregiver of someone who has gone through this process.)

As a caregiver to someone who was diagnosed with cancer, I was there to provide whatever support that was needed. I would help drive my loved one to doctor’s appointments, spend time with them when needed, and provide love.

As a massage therapist, I bring the same care that I gave my loved one to each of my clients. It’s a sacred time. Yes, I consider massage time a sacred space. I am here to provide a calm environment where people can let go of fear, and allow their body to find a peace that is no longer provided to them otherwise. My knowledge allows me to modify each treatment to meet the person on my table where they are. I work slowly and lightly, talking (with my hands) to an overstressed nervous system that is in flight or flight mode. I allow my hands provide comfort to a body that so desperately needs it. Allowing the body to relax allows the mind to relax, even if it’s just for a very small amount of time, where the person on my table doesn’t have to think about anything at all but breathing, letting all else go.

For massage does not have to be about this or that muscle that is totally bothering the client. It’s about learning how to listen to your body and learning what it wants and needs to let go so that it can find comfort. Because comfort, in the end, is what we all are seeking!
