Rebuilding Trust: How Massage Helps the Body Feel Safe Again

Over the last few years, I’ve worked with many people living with a wide range of conditions—chronic pain, fibromyalgia, digestive issues, and more. Many have spent years cycling through doctor’s appointments, steroids, daily pain meds, and rounds of physical therapy. Most end up frustrated because they’re still in pain. Eventually, they come to me asking the question I used to dread:
“What can you do that hasn’t already been done?”
The first time I heard it, I froze. Honestly, the second and third times too. What do you say to someone who’s tried everything?
Lately, I’ve been thinking about that question again—how to better help those who feel defeated after years of searching for relief. The simple truth is this: massage can help. But like anything meaningful, it takes time, trust, and teamwork between client and therapist.
My biggest fear has always been that people will scoff—that they’ll think I’m nuts or that they can’t afford another “maybe.” But what if…
What if we could slowly help your mind and body learn to trust each other again? What if your body could finally shift out of fight-or-flight mode and into a space that allows it to rest and heal?
Massage, when you’re dealing with chronic issues, works much like a medication—it has to be done consistently and intentionally. Regular sessions give your nervous system the safety it craves, allowing your body to realize it doesn’t have to stay on high alert.
This process takes time. It takes patience. And yes, it takes effort from both of us. Because when your body has lived in survival mode for years, even relaxing can feel dangerous. But together, we can help it relearn what safety feels like.
That’s the goal of Somatic Bodywork—to bring mind and body together through hands-on massage and Reiki, creating space for your body to finally exhale, release, and begin to restore itself.
