More Than Just Massage.. Healing with Somatic Synergy

By Jet Rupar, LMT CMLDT

Have you ever noticed how much a simple touch can convey? A firm grip might feel overwhelming, while a gentle hand on the shoulder can bring an almost instant sigh of relief.

The longer I practice massage, the more I’ve come to understand what my teachers tried to share with us as new therapists: during massage therapy, we’re not only working with muscles — we’re working with the nervous system. Each session is a kind of conversation, a dance between tension and release. Our hands listen, noticing where the body is holding on and where it’s ready to let go.

Somatic Synergy, in the form I offer today, is something that developed over many years. Long after massage school, and after years of practicing Reiki (a gentle form of energy healing), I discovered how powerful it was to blend the two — first on myself. Working with muscle, while also offering energy to help ease pain, became more than just self-care. It became a way to truly reconnect body, mind, and nervous system.

And then, as I often do, I went looking for more information. That’s when I discovered the concept of nervous system retraining — the idea that our brains and bodies can learn to respond differently to stress.

This approach uses tools like breathwork, meditation, journaling, and professional therapy to help shift the nervous system out of constant “fight or flight” mode and into a calmer, more balanced state. I loved this idea: that something stressful didn’t always have to feel overwhelming, that I could choose a different way of responding.

As I continued healing myself and connecting with others on similar journeys, I began to see how much value there was in what I could offer.

There’s a saying: “The body keeps the score, even when the mind forgets.” Our stress, our memories, even our traumas — they can live in the body long after the moment has passed.

This is where Somatic Synergy truly took form. It’s massage — working with muscle to let the body soften and remind the nervous system that it’s safe to let go — blended with Reiki, which helps guide and settle the body’s energy even further. Together, they create a pathway for release, regulation, and deep restoration.

Reconnecting my mind and body has been essential in my own life.

There were times I wasn’t connected to my body at all. Learning to return to it wasn’t easy — it meant feeling the pain I had been avoiding. But I gave myself permission to sit with the discomfort, reminding myself that the pain would eventually fade.

And yes, it still comes back. Pain has its own rhythm. But each time I reconnect, I meet it differently — with more compassion, more awareness, and more trust in my body’s ability to find balance again.

My own path has shown me that healing isn’t about “fixing” ourselves — it’s about learning to listen, reconnect, and create space for our bodies to move out of survival mode and into balance.

That’s what Somatic Synergy offers: a safe space where massage and Reiki come together to calm the nervous system, release what the body has been holding, and remind you that it is possible to feel more at ease in your own skin.

You don’t have to carry tension, stress, or old patterns alone. Your body has the ability to change how it responds, and with the right support, you can guide it there.

If my journey taught me anything, it’s this: the body remembers — but it can also relearn, reset, and restore. And I’d be honored to walk with you on that path.
